"Hey! I'm the Manager...Why Aren't You Listening to me?"

Dr. Steve Farner's journey into management began almost two decades ago when he decided to quit attending his principles of management course in college because it was in his view, "common sense." He changed his major to finance and graduated from Iowa State University in 1988. His unique perspective on management stems primarily from his eight years of management experience in his family's wholesale distribution company, where he soon realized both how difficult and how important management is. He found himself constantly asking such questions as "why aren't they listening to me?" or "why aren't they doing the job my way?"

He received his MBA from Creighton University in 1992. It was at Creighton when he "actually went to class" that he realized how little he knew about how to manage and lead people in organizations. After acquiring some of the basic management tools, he realized the enormous potential of people that are both motivated and have the ability to produce at their best, and determined that he wanted a career espousing these principles.

In 1997, he received his Ph.D. in Management from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. His main interest is organizational behavior, which emphasizes the psychological side of what makes people do what they do.

Steve currently teaches management courses to both graduate and undergraduate students, online and in the classroom, at both Bellevue University and the University of Nebraska. In addition to this, he creates and markets educational programs for Bellevue University’s corporate partners.

Organizations that currently work with Steve include The Gallup Organization, PayPal, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the Omaha Public Power District.

He has published articles on the topics of customer service, 360-degree performance appraisal, and the effects of employee engagement on customers. His other writing projects include reviewing management texts and writing instructors manuals for companies such as McGraw Hill and Prentice Hall.

He conducts training sessions and keynote addresses on a variety of management topics, including human motivation, leadership, conflict and negotiation, interviewing and performance appraisal, and structuring organizations during times of change.
